SPORTS REVIEW 2008
2008 has been a strange year on the Sporting front with the Northern Centres Rally being cancelled and the Children’s Sports venue being changed at a late date.
I would like to begin by thanking my fellow Sports Officer, Andy Futcher, for all his help and support over the past 12 months. I would also like to thank the team managers and coaches for all their hard work. The volleyball training, in particular, seems to have gone down really well. Thanks very much to John Loughran for organising this.
Four heats have taken place on rallies during the year for Lawn Darts and Quoits, culminating in the Final for the Centre Trophies, which will take place at Catterick Racecourse on Saturday 20th September. Many thanks to Stan Gelson and Keith Carter for looking after the Lawn Darts and Quoits so efficiently.
A huge thank you must also go to Keith, Gill and Ben Carter for running the Lawn Darts and Quoits competition at the Joint Yorkshire Six Stars Rally.
The Boule competitions for the Centre Trophies took place at Thornton Lodge, Easingwold in May. The winners will receive their trophies at the AGM. Thank you to Jeff Gregory and Austin Elliot for running the boule competitions.
North Yorkshire once again put in a good performance at the National Rally at Holkham Hall, Norfolk, over the Whit Bank Holiday weekend. Thank you to everyone who gave up his or her time to represent the Centre.
We had 23 vans in attendance and from this small group we entered the following events: family lawn darts, 2 teams in the petanque competition, men’s volleyball, under 15 football, 19-34 gent’s football, the strongman competition and the inter centre quiz. The main results were as follows:

The Joint Yorkshire Centre Sports took place at Rufforth Playing Fields, York, and the first weekend in July. North Yorkshire had a fantastic weekend on the sports field and came away with some fine silverware – The Henrietta Spivey Trophy, awarded to the Centre with the most points in the Children’s Sports, and the Mike and Viki Tripp Trophy, awarded to the Centre with the most points in the team sports. Jean was delighted to accept these trophies on your behalf. Thank you to each and every one of you.

Well done to Daniel Loughran on winning the Victor Ludorum Trophy for the 2nd year in succession. Daniel was also the first male home in the Fun Run. Little Joe Futcher did an excellent job in completing the Fun Run. Well done Joe, I think that’s quite an achievement for a 3 year old.
would just like to conclude by thanking everyone who has competed or assisted Andy and I in any way throughout the year. Team Managers and Coaches, your efforts are very much appreciated not only by Andy and myself but also by the Centre. Many thanks once again.
